    ELR Gagetpown

Last weekend Steven and I had the opportunity to shoot 2000m at a combined PRS and ELR practice. We had 2 new rifles: PGW Timberwolf with 31" fluted 9T JC Custom Barrels Inc. in .338LM and a Barnard PL, 300 Norma Magnum 30" 9T JC barrel, McMillan ADJ-A5 modified stock. Scopes were Sightron VIII 5-40X56, mils, 40mm tube and Delta Stryker FFP 3.5-30X56 mils. Both rifles have Audere 20 MOA Adversus 1-piece 20 MOA mounts. Trigger Techs in both and Spearhead MB on the .338LM.

BJ Nicholson took us to the Musquodoboit Valley Rifle and Revolver Club, where we were limited to 300 y. The .338LM was all over the place, later determined to be due to a loose scope rail! The 300 Norma was tested with 3 loads and we quickly shot a group well under .5 MOA.

Gagetown: after loctiting/torquing the rail, we easily had hits at 600m, 1200 and 1600m with the .338LM with Lapua factory 300 grain Scenar with consistent elevation. We then tried the Norma and got hits/zeroes at 600 and 1200m. At 2000m we had many misfires but finally made a hit. We will try the CCI mag primers in the Timberwolf to see if that is the issue.

Thanks to BJ and especially Mark McMullin for organising the weekend, as well as Nick Buchanan - huge amount of work. Honourable mention must go to Mitch Croxall. This guy loves ELR and has the kit to prove it and generously shares a wealth of knowledge. This was a great opportunity to use nice kit and apply some ballistic homework.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on that Sightron SVIII. I haven't seen much about them online, but the little I have seems very positive.

Unholysavage, I just read reviews on Sniper's Hide and elsewhere. There is no doubt that the optics are on par or superior to scopes costing twice as much. They have a forgiving eyebox and reliable tracking. Steven preferred the Delta Stryker but he has to adjust the ocular to full positive to get a clear reticle view, which he finds too fine. His criticism I'm sure is due to his eyesight.

Sightron is on the move, being owned by Tokina, a huge Japanese company and they are under new management which listen to top shooters and reacts.

    Peter

Hi timothyferriss, thanks - is there any particular criticism of our set-up that you wish to share and could you recommend alternatives or modification? Any help would be appreciated.
